Why are there so many kids playing online and video games when there are so many wonderful "physical" building games for kids like LEGO, Meccano, Mega Bloks, puzzle games, etc.? As good parents, shouldn't we be a little more selective about the games we offer our children? Isn't it important to maintain a good balance between "the old and the new" when it comes to the games we give our children as a gift?
There is plenty of evidence that LEGO, for example, promotes children's design and creativity. They are educational as they teach all kinds of eye and hand coordination. It can be argued that children can acquire some of these computer game skills, but it is certainly not a substitute for creating structures that require hundreds of small, small or larger pieces of building to be physically built with fingers that are still the ones develops.
I have always given my kids puzzles, LEGO, Meccano, etc. for their gifts, even though they also play computer games. I think it's a good balance between traditional and modern games for them. I do not believe in rejecting my kids computer games that are popular as long as they are not harmful.
